Why are there chairs atop our miniature serving ladles?
The answer may surprise you. We were quick to find it. And to stop there.
Why not?
After all, delight is not to be explained.
Are our chairs useful? No, they are not. Not for sitting on!
The ladle side is extremely useful, for dips, dressings and sauces. Soft, creamy desserts. But any spoon will do that.
Small things bring pleasure, whether it takes us back to our childhood, or whether it is the idea that our own world is tiny, and dear. Or whether it makes us feel magical, like Alice in Wonderland.
We choose tiny because it makes our hearts go bump.
Enjoying tiny things does not mean you are not a serious person. It just means that part of you is not.
These chairs will not save the world from its current predicaments. They exist for pleasure. It's not the same pleasure as eating chocolate, but for the pleasure of large objects reduced past a useful size, into the miniature. The pleasure of things not being useful.
Oddly, they have made me appreciate large scale chairs more. All the designs.
But that was after the fact.
Why tiny little chairs atop our tiny ladle spoons?
We don't know.
Maybe this quote by Ionesco, the great absurdist french playwright, and author of ‘The Chairs’ will help explain my position…Although it also may not.
“I look out the chair while eating my pillow. I open the wall, I walk with my ears. I have ten eyes to walk with and two fingers to look with. I put my head on the floor to sit down, I put my bottom on the ceiling. After eating the music box, I spread jam on the rug for a great dessert.”
Am I alone in finding this quote strangely comforting and even joyful?
